The story: A psychiatric hospital in New York. A man, George Tatum, has been under intensive treatment for two years, and they’re experimenting on him with certain drugs that seem to improve his condition. He’s classified as psychotic/paranoid/amnesiac. Contrary to what the doctor treating him thinks, one of the experimental drugs given to him causes harmful effects. George then breaks free of all control, and, heading toward an unknown destination, starts leaving a trail of horrendous murders in his wake...
The movie:
In the early 80s, Italian writer-director Romano Scavolini tried his hand at a very trendy genre, the slasher, and delivered Nightmares in Daytona Beach. This Italy-US co-production immediately faced the wrath of censorship. In North America, the MPA (Motion Picture Association) rated the film X. In the United Kingdom, the distributor who dared release the film in its original cut faced legal action. Romano Scavolini's brutal and disturbing work was ultimately banned and joined the infamous Videonasty list. In France, Nightmares in Daytona Beach was restricted to viewers over 18.
Nightmares in Daytona Beach also featured special effects by two of the best specialists in the field: Tom Savini (Friday the 13th, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead) and Ed French (Sleepaway Camp, CHUD, Breeders, Creepshow 2)
